Workshop: Backbends and Inversions

This class will turn your world upside down. To effectively invert the body we must create a strong foundation from which to grow. If we want to go up we must first learn to go down. This can be achieved by exploring the opposing forces at play in inversions. Back-bends can truly be defined as front openings. Rather than collapsing in the back we learn to expand the front and open the heart to discover more depth with greater ease in our back bending. We will make things fun and do a lot of partner and group work. This workshop is ideal for astanga practitioners, but anyone who wants to incorporate more backward bending into their yoga practice is welcome.

With: Jenna and Jessica

Time: 1-3:30

Date: Friday, December 9th

Cost: 150 LE

To reserve a space, please pay full amount in the Breathing Room.

Join us at The Breathing Room
For an All-Day Open House

Saturday, September 17, 2011

Free classes are offered all day long

8 AM – 9 AM Gentle Flow with Jessica
For beginners and people looking for a relaxing practice. The postures flow slowly from one pose into the next- relaxing the mind, increasing flexibility, and gently building strength

9:30 AM- 10:30 AM Ashtanga with Jessica
For people who enjoy an active practice. It is best to have a working knowledge of the standard yoga postures so that you can flow easily through the practice. Great for building strength and flexibility,

11 AM - 12 Noon Power Yoga with Barbara
For those looking for a physical workout. This class is built on an understanding of anatomy and focuses on proper alignment. Great for building strength. Suitable for all levels.

12:30 PM - 1:30 PM Vinyasa with Tasha
A creative, vigorous form of yoga, linking breath, body and mind, Vinyasa means connecting. Expect some uplifting music during the asana practice and a deep relaxation at the end.

2 PM - 3 PM Sivananda Yoga with Dominika
A typical Sivananda class includes pranayama and is slow paced to allow a full exploration of each pose. After pranayama and a warming up with sun salutations, the focus is on 12 basic postures. In final relaxation autosuggestion leads to complete relaxation of body and mind. The goal of this practice is to reach a well balanced state of body and mind.

3:30 PM - 4:30 PM Strength and Flexibility with Lulwa
For those looking to challenge themselves with a physical practice that works on developing strength and flexibility through a series of postures based on the Bikram yoga sequence.

5 PM – 6 PM Hatha with Yara
A gentle moving yoga class focusing on relaxing flow and gentle breath. This class will help to calm the mind, relax the body and improve your overall physical and mental well-being. Great for beginners and those seeking a more meditative practice.

6 PM - 8 PM Reception

Sangha Yoga

When the students are ready, the teacher will appear.

A number of Breathing Room Friends have been asking about 8 AM classes on weekdays. Unfortunately, we have no teachers who are available to teach then. Instead, we will open up the Breathing Room space from 8 to 9:30 am on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays for BR Friends to practice in a group setting.

This practice will be led only in the sense that Jonah will be following a modified version of the Astanga primary series and, if anybody would like, he will describe the next posture.

There is no charge for these sessions, unless anyone would like to donate to the BR Karma fund.

August Newsletter

Ramadan Karim Yogis and Yoginis!

August has arrived, and with it a few more of our summer travelers. We’ve started adding classes, meeting new teachers, and planning workshops. As the new school year approaches, we have a lot to look forward to.

We spent some time trying to determine what classes would best accommodate the lifestyle surrounding Ramadan and here’s what we’ve come up with.

AM Classes (10 AM on Sunday and Tuesday) (9 AM on Thursday)
5 PM Restorative Yoga (Perfect for those fasting)
8 PM (Because sometimes later is better)

Other things stay the same. Our 6:30 classes Monday – Wednesday are still going strong, offering more physically challenging yoga classes such as Astanga and Power Yoga. So if you are looking to build strength, or deepen your mind–body experience, these classes might be what you are looking for.

One of the most commonly asked questions is, “what yoga class is good for a beginner?” Every body is different and so talking to a teacher is the best way to find out what is perfect for you. (See Open House details that follow) But to help get the ball rolling we have designed a Beginners’ Series, which takes place Saturdays at 10 AM. Each week a different style of yoga is offered at the beginners’ level. These one-hour classes will introduce the postures and guide you through your practice with detailed instructions and demonstrations. (NOTE: The 5 PM classes during the month of August are also highly suitable for beginning practitioners.)

August Workshop
Yoga Nidra
Date: Saturday, August 20, 2011
Time: 12 noon – 1 PM
Fee: 100 LE

This guided meditation is the one of the most relaxing forms of yoga. Spend the hour taking a tour of your body though your mind to find a deep, peacefulness. Many will choose to come to the 10AM Beginner’s Astanga class and stay for the Yoga Nidra.

Upcoming Events and Workshops

Breathing Room Open House
Date: September 17, 2011
Session Time: 8 AM – 8 PM (details of the sessions will be put on Facebook and the website soon)
Fee: None

Enjoy a full day of complementary yoga classes and join us for a reception from 6 – 8. This is the perfect opportunity to:
• Find the studio,
• Meet and talk with all of the teachers,
• Get the answers to all of the yoga questions that you have been saving up,
• Sample the different styles of yoga to find out which one is right for you.
At the Open House you can receive a Three Class Sample Pass valid from August 18th – October 31st.
Our goal for the Open House is to bring the knowledge of yoga to as many people as possible. It is our dearest hope that you will find classes that fit your schedule and a style of yoga that fits your lifestyle.

Astanga Yoga Weekend with Bobbi Mitisi
Date: October 6, 7, 8, 2011
This will be Bobbi’s third visit to The Breathing Room. Each year she provides us with something new. This year, in addition to the 1st series and 2nd series workshop, she will provide a special “yoga off the mat” session, that talks about what it means to “living a yogic lifestyle”. This session will have an introduction to Ayuveda with a special focus on Ayuvedic cooking. Space is limited, so pre-registration is required. Priority registration goes to those registering for the full weekend, but it is possible to sign up for individual workshops if space is available.

We hope that this newsletter find you all happy and well. We’re looking forward to the new -year with joy and anticipation.

ATTENTION - Regarding Class Times

Dear Breathing Room Friends

We are currently experiencing a technical glitch with our online schedule. It seems that some automatic daylight savings time feature has effected our calendar. At present - we are still offering classes at 5PM and 6:30 PM (NOT the 4 and 5:30 times listed) Currently - every class on the schedule is being taught an hour later than it is listed. We will fix this problem as soon as possible, but I hope this note finds you if you are checking the schedule before we have the problem resolved. If you want to verify the class time you can call the Yoga Hotline at 016 1010 898 and speak with Mohammed.
Sincerest Regards,
The Friends of the Breathing Room

Looking for Meditation?

We are offering a 20 minute Guided Meditation on Wednesday between 7:30 – 7:50. Meditation is the art of silencing the mind. It’s an attempt to be fully present in the moment and free our minds of attachments. One important facet of yoga is that it prepares our bodies to meditate. Often the aches and pains of sitting in one place are enough to distract our minds. In many cases the physical exertion of a yoga class is what enables the willingness and desire to take a moment of rest. This meditation was designed to flow seamlessly from the preceding yoga class. But of course there are no restrictions or obligations.

The Guided Meditations are offered free of charge

Class Schedule and Fees for Feb.6-10

Starting Sunday, February 6th and continuing through February 10th, we will offer two Karma Yoga classes daily.
Classes will be at 1PM and 4PM
What is Karma Yoga?
Essentially, it's a philosophy rather than a style of practice. In a Karma Yoga class people gather together to give and receive freely.

The Breathing Room gives the space, ie. no profits are used for maintenance and upkeep. The Breathing room receives the warmth of the community that gathers within its walls.

The teachers give their time and knowledge ie. they are not paid for teaching the class. The teachers receive the karmic rewards of giving and sharing the practice of yoga.

The students give donations for charity (freely and without obligation). In this case we are using these donations for medical relief (medicine and supplies) in Cairo. The students receive the yoga practice, an hour of guided peace, a space to allow yourself to breathe.

The Breathing Room usually offers one Karma Class a month, but we thought that we could extend the giving to help promote peace in a this time of conflict.

Notes on donations: Between accessing funds, questionable employment, and other extenuating circumstances, we understand that money is an issue for many. Don't feel pressure to make a donation if that is not the right choice for you. We would much rather have you in class with a free mind and open heart. If you would like to use your class pass to make a donation, just make a note on the sign in sheet and we will transfer the funds accordingly.

We hope that we will be able to return to a full schedule of classes starting on Friday, February 11th. We'll be keeping you posted on events as they unfold.

Wishing everyone peace, peace and more peace. Nameste

Coming Together

Sometimes, just taking an hour to breathe and move your body is all it takes to bring peace and perspective. We are going to continue offering 1PM yoga classes for all those interested. The teachers are volunteering their time, so there is no financial strings tied to coming.

We will be accepting donations and all proceeds will go to the purchase of medical supplies.

Sending more love - Jessica and the Friends of The Breathing Room

Yoga for Peace

May you be filled with loving kindness, may you be peaceful and at ease, may you be happy, may you be well.

Between evening classes being made untenable by early curfews - and not being able to communicate classes at any other time - we have missed a much needed yoga practice.

I just wanted to let everyone know that teachers have been calling to say that we should start offering classes immediately. Meet us at 1PM, on Feb 3 for our first Yoga for Peace class- and as we organize our efforts we will give you more updates. Sending much needed love.

New class, Saturday, January 29th, 12 noon

Because of the increased attendance for our Saturday classes, we are adding an extra class starting this week. On Saturday, January 29th, Jill will be teaching the Beginner's Vinyasa class at 10 am, and then, at 12 noon, she will offer a regular Vinyasa class. We are hoping that this will help spread out the students, and make for a more comfortable class. To view the schedule, click here.

A Word of Thanks

For all of the teachers, students, family and friends who joined together to make the opening of the new Breathing Room Studio a success - we offer a deep, heartfelt THANKS. The new practice space really does offer a calm and peaceful place to practice yoga.

In sharing our thanks we could not proceed without commenting on the love and generosity that went into creating the space. Mariam Enan, our most recent Friend of the Breathing Room, single handedly designed, commissioned, financed, and decorated the new space. When asked what sparked such an act of kindness, her answer was, "It's something that we needed in Cairo. I'm happy that I was able to be a part of it." Since its inception, The Breathing Room has been graced with people coming together, sharing their talents, their resources and their efforts. It’s wonderful to see this continue in such a profound gesture.

Now that we are in a “space all our own” we will be able to offer more classes – so don’t be shy, let us know what you would like. The best way to ask questions or share your ideas is through our FaceBook group. Soon we will move to a FB page which will offer even better communication options.

It’s really exciting to see everything come together. I hope that you all enjoy what the new space has to offer. May your days be filled with light and may your yoga practice bring you joy.

Nameste.
